<br /><br />Hey, kids! It's been a while. I've been drawing some diary comics lately, and here are some of them. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
This first batch were drawn for hourly comics day, hence the time stamps. These are pretty raw since they were basically drawn on the fly during my workday at my horrible day job. The pictures were taken with my phone rather than with my scanner, so they're not really ready for publication, but they were never intended that way anyway. More of a five finger exercise for comics artists, if you know what I mean.<br /><br /><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFY_YmKmefQQNrAIlkINY-vOCtJPxIfm4BdTrJ_Ibe6yEvgEF6Gu4aQ2aK0SVIMLpXSaw6I2q9rwhJQg8cdRAdtsmuuA9Apzib9_OCF8VqG21VLhgD5NCtpCGaiwkl0kuO9Kax2sjDUZg/s1600/hourly4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="741" data-original-width="1600" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFY_YmKmefQQNrAIlkINY-vOCtJPxIfm4BdTrJ_Ibe6yEvgEF6Gu4aQ2aK0SVIMLpXSaw6I2q9rwhJQg8cdRAdtsmuuA9Apzib9_OCF8VqG21VLhgD5NCtpCGaiwkl0kuO9Kax2sjDUZg/s400/hourly4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This one was an outgrowth of the hourly comics, but it's a bit more finished. Still drawn pretty fast during downtime at my day job. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q1fh-QBFCPg/XKDG1vjyvfI/AAAAAAAARoQ/vchi9LYARts-OwKV6sdo4DJa1W_vFHL8gCLcBGAs/s1600/pharmacy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1043" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q1fh-QBFCPg/XKDG1vjyvfI/AAAAAAAARoQ/vchi9LYARts-OwKV6sdo4DJa1W_vFHL8gCLcBGAs/s400/pharmacy1.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<br />
And this one is a bit more finished, though it's in the same vein. I like this one a lot, but the last panel gave me fits. <br />

<br />
I've had a couple of illustration gigs this summer. The first one consisted of drawing some superheroes, for what use I do not know. Here are some of them. These are all pretty much pure watercolor. I wish I'd sprung for better watercolor paper. Instead, I used bristol board. The White Wombat is brush and ink and watercolor, while the Kirby-ish one with the Superman knock off was drawn with a mix of brush and ink, Pitt pens, and watercolor. I like stretching my legs in watercolor. It's my favorite painting medium. The client wanted most of these to look like comics from the eighties, and the only really specific instruction I had was to make the Red Queen look like the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, only in red. These turned out okay and they were fun to do. <br />

These were drawn for an institutional client and were locations around Depaul University. These are mostly drawn with a Pitt brush pen, with a couple of smaller pens. The process for this was educational. In any event, these are slightly different from the ones they eventually used. These turned out nice on a pretty tight deadline. <br />

I have a backlog of commission work, but I want to get back to doing comics as soon as that's cleared away. The story I did last year for We're Still Here is out in the wild, though, and the book its in is lovely and can be ordered now, pending the completion of the Kickstarter fulfillment. <br />
<br />
I won't be gone so long next time. <br />

Holy crap, it's been almost a year since I posted any art here. That cannot stand, so here are some pieces I've done at my weekly figure drawing sessions. The piece at the top of this post is a watercolor on Canson sketchbook paper. Turned out surprisingly well, all things considered. The rest is mostly work in graphite pencil. <br />

Here's some more art. A pretty random selection, with some more notes on process.<br />
<br />
The piece at the head of this post is a watercolor painting I made of my friends, Katie Zall and <a href="https://twitter.com/Quinnae_Moon">Katherine Cross</a>. Mostly just for fun, but I wanted to get the stick out of the ass of my figure drawing, so I didn't really care if it was anatomically accurate (it mostly is, oddly enough). I also wanted to transfer some of my obsession with textures in my ink drawings to watercolor, to see if it was compatible. It is. I also wanted to do something nice for Katie, who has been a pretty good friend, even if we've never actually met in meatspace. Here's the drawing I did over lunch a few weeks ago. There are some differences. <br />
<br />

<br />
This next piece was done for an inking exchange on Facebook. The original drawing is by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/magzdilla/">Maggie Thurston</a>. I chose to do my finishing work in watercolor, because I'm trying to get back into working with watercolor. Here are the original and finished versions: <br />

This piece was done for the Misspent Youth project, now <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertbohl/misspent-youth-rpg-sell-out-with-me">funding on Kickstarter</a> if you're interested. This is a character who is part of a forced labor population in an asteroid mine. He's been experimented on and the cybernetic ports are still all over his body. Here's a drawing I did at a life drawing session a couple of years ago. I don't think I ever posted it before, but I was going through my old notebooks this morning and ran across it. It's a terrific drawing, I think, so I thought I'd share it. It's red col-erase Prismacolor. <br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z-neIvv3Bvo/WSIoPCFRz1I/AAAAAAAAOGE/JhTn13rzgH8RpTMssWiku9XlCiSVyj8VwCLcB/s1600/AustenSecretRevised.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z-neIvv3Bvo/WSIoPCFRz1I/AAAAAAAAOGE/JhTn13rzgH8RpTMssWiku9XlCiSVyj8VwCLcB/s400/AustenSecretRevised.png" width="272" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm currently working on a role playing game called Misspent Youth. I thought I'd share some of my process for these, and some thoughts on the economics of being an illustrator. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The above drawing is the final product for a scenario set in Regency England--a Jane Austen pastiche if you will. I'm pretty happy with this. It gave me the opportunity to draw hair and fashion, which are things I enjoy drawing. But the first draft of this drawing was awkward: <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SqgTV_VbrnM/WSIoXoE8IjI/AAAAAAAAOGU/NwRu1aKdu6IA_Qk1bkXLo4u-29TDaKpZgCEw/s1600/AustenSecret.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SqgTV_VbrnM/WSIoXoE8IjI/AAAAAAAAOGU/NwRu1aKdu6IA_Qk1bkXLo4u-29TDaKpZgCEw/s320/AustenSecret.png" width="194" /></a></div>
<br />
There are basically two problems with this drawing. First, the whisperer's hand is too big. Second, she's whispering to the wrong place. I work with physical media--these are brush and ink--so correcting them is a bit of a chore. The first thing I had to do was re-pose the rear figure, which meant drawing her again. This is that drawing: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAV5xoOf9EubRYBnfsGieh5xuIzy9fY4Or4A9mGgxBcfOEFac4prOQN1hE5SkiU8aQu_GkKrCqZzv5ja1yRDQhj6ZPBx8aWSXdPQj6BF27tTs-F25DKDZ029hYeWaqkpbqsaMwUldk0Q/s1600/rage%2526resentmentRevision.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAV5xoOf9EubRYBnfsGieh5xuIzy9fY4Or4A9mGgxBcfOEFac4prOQN1hE5SkiU8aQu_GkKrCqZzv5ja1yRDQhj6ZPBx8aWSXdPQj6BF27tTs-F25DKDZ029hYeWaqkpbqsaMwUldk0Q/s320/rage%2526resentmentRevision.png" width="208" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't bother drawing her left arm, because it was going to be positioned behind the foreground figure. I also didn't bother with some of the other details that were going to be obscured. I traced the outline of the foreground figure on this drawing before I penciled it so I knew what was going to need detail and what wasn't (the neckline of her dress, for instance). Then I punched a hole in the scan where the original figure was and added this drawing on a layer behind the foreground figure. Easy peasy. <br />
<br />
But I have too much time in this drawing. <br />
<br />
Here's the economics of this drawing: I'm being paid $50 for this drawing and the same amount for each of the other drawings for this commission--about par for the course for role playing games--so the first thing I do with these drawings ISN'T research or penciling or whatnot, it's budgeting my time. I prefer to make a professional wage for my illustration work, which at the bottom end is about $45 an hour. I'd prefer to make more, but I'm a nobody. Lest you think that's a lot, well, here's the thing: I paid a lot of money for my art degree. I don't want to work for minimum wage. I have a mortgage and utility bills to pay, which are overhead costs that I soak up as a self-employed person. I also pay self-employment tax. So take that $45 an hour and cut it basically in half. Also: look at what a plumber or an electrician or a mechanic gets paid and tell me with a straight face that my desired rate too much (go ahead, I'll wait). Most of my projects aren't billed hourly, though. This project, for example, is paid as a flat rate. And that's fine. I actually quoted this project at a lower rate than what I'm being paid, so don't think I'm complaining about this, because these things happen sometimes. <br />
<br />
But what this means is, I have to budget my time. Ideally, each of these drawings would take an hour to draw, and I may actually hit that mark on the others. But this one has more than that. I spent about a half-hour doing some research on Regency fashions and hairstyles for this drawing before I put pencil to paper. The pencil drawing for the first version took about 35 minutes. My under-drawings tend to be pretty loose and I do most of the fine detail work when I'm inking. I have about an hour and fifty minutes in the first version of this drawing, all told. I'm not happy about this, and it's all my own doing, but it's not a disaster just yet. I'm still making about $13 an hour at this point, which, though not ideal, is acceptable and more than I make at my horrible day job. Anyway, the new whisperer took me about 20 minutes to draw and another hour to ink, plus scanning and time to draw a mask on the original drawing and other digital noodling to make it presentable, and I think I have a bit over four hours in this drawing. That works out to about $6.25 an hour when you distill it all down. So sub-minimum wage. Fuck. <br />
<br />
So what about the next drawing? Well, here's the sketch I sent the client:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6dXBeU2qDKg/WSIoWqVGOuI/AAAAAAAAOGU/JxqzuLfaxlUEzIgTtnNlO7_Z2gLB--GuwCEw/s1600/girlband1sketch2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6dXBeU2qDKg/WSIoWqVGOuI/AAAAAAAAOGU/JxqzuLfaxlUEzIgTtnNlO7_Z2gLB--GuwCEw/s400/girlband1sketch2.png" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is set in a dystopia, and features a riot grrl band (described as being people of color, which is fun for me to draw, btw). This worked out better than the first drawing, and there are no major changes pending for the final version, I hope. The client has signed off on this with some minor suggestions that I'll add in the inking stage. Once again, I have about 35 minutes in this drawing, but none of the research I did for the first drawing. So far so good. Was I able to ink this to a suitable standard in 25 minutes to hit that magical one hour mark? No. But I was able to ink it in an hour and 20 minutes, give or take. That would put me in the neighborhood of $16 an hour net, and while that's not ideal, it's not bad. I can live with that. There were some slight revisions to the finished drawing, but nothing that took more than five minutes, which is negligible. Here's the final version: <br /><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8iyNcOK_Xc8/WSy7kzkaxzI/AAAAAAAAOLY/Rz9kjE0R8ekABOJ17wsH4MttBdEg-slmgCLcB/s1600/GirlBandDraft.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="479" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8iyNcOK_Xc8/WSy7kzkaxzI/AAAAAAAAOLY/Rz9kjE0R8ekABOJ17wsH4MttBdEg-slmgCLcB/s400/GirlBandDraft.png" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
The third drawing for this commission has been a bit more difficult. I haven't got a good handle on the material yet even though I've sent the client two sketches (and will probably make a third). Brainstorming on paper is often part of the process. We'll see how it goes. <br /><br />Would any of this go faster if I worked digitally? Likely not. I'm actually slower with a Wacom tablet than I am with ink and paper, and once it's scanned, it's equally editable. I don't have a Cintiq or equivalent, btw, which <i>might</i> make it faster to draw digitally. Beyond that, I like physical media because I have a physical object when I'm done, which I can then maybe sell. But that's another matter entirely. <br /><br />If you think I shouldn't be obsessing about money as it relates to art, please allow me to direct you to <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/filthy-lucre">Molly Crabapple on the subject</a> who should disabuse you of that notion. Art is a job. Art is a profession. Art is work, and often tedious, mind-numbing work at that. And, yeah, you can get amateurs to work for nothing if you're ruthless and persuasive, and you can get an artist in Indonesia or Pakistan to work for next to nothing, but since I live in the USA, I have USA bills to pay and I can't pay them on $2 an hour piecework. Ah, the internet. Destroying the arts since 1995....<br />
<br />
Also, to my client: I'm really enjoying working on this project and you should not take this as a complaint about you guys. You guys have been great. <br />

<br />
The last few drawings I've made at my weekly life drawing sessions have been pretty good. Likenesses are a bugaboo for me, so the fact that all of these models have distinct faces that actually look like them in my newest drawings pleases me no end. I realize that verisimilitude is not the aim of art (if it was, the king of the artists would the photographer), and I realize that any drawing made from life is necessarily a composite image because even the most disciplined of models will move during the session, and the artist themselves will move, too, but a good likeness is always a goal for me. I'm a representational artist by temperament, so it's a matter of pride. Anyway, these are all drawn with a graphite pencil (a number 2 pencil, as it so happens, rather than a snooty art pencil). The above drawing is especially satisfying for me because it's the first time I've drawn this model and I got her in one, awkwardly posed feet and all. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AUOoednyhF4/WRh2kmKu5RI/AAAAAAAAOEs/a8Gag18d6GUDujiVjK6XrK4V2AeeI7rlQCPcB/s1600/Kayleen6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AUOoednyhF4/WRh2kmKu5RI/AAAAAAAAOEs/a8Gag18d6GUDujiVjK6XrK4V2AeeI7rlQCPcB/s400/Kayleen6.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This drawing and the one at the head of this post are very similar. I was in the same spot for both of them and the prop set-up hadn't changed much.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tr0_SQh449Y/WRh2i00r0OI/AAAAAAAAOEo/CwzelQU0UhEJaytW3JhcNRczo8SsfuUbwCPcB/s1600/monica2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tr0_SQh449Y/WRh2i00r0OI/AAAAAAAAOEo/CwzelQU0UhEJaytW3JhcNRczo8SsfuUbwCPcB/s400/monica2.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm particularly happy with this one. I mostly got everything right, even within my method of creative scribbling. I'm really happy with her face. I've just been feeling it lately, I guess. <br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BqUWqNPeea0/WPKddV5lVpI/AAAAAAAAOAA/WpbcGqEYk9860JyZSvm1bX4IH1wdez36wCLcB/s1600/Yithian.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BqUWqNPeea0/WPKddV5lVpI/AAAAAAAAOAA/WpbcGqEYk9860JyZSvm1bX4IH1wdez36wCLcB/s400/Yithian.jpeg" width="342" /></a></div>
<br /><br />I started drawing when I was a kid because I wanted to draw monsters and dinosaurs. I get to do that for money sometimes as an adult, so who's to say I'm a failure in life, eh? I don't draw monsters for pleasure very often anymore, but sometimes I do. I'm thinking of doing a series of monsters as a medical fundraiser later this year, but that's the cart before the horse right now. Anyway, here's a drawing of a monster I did this morning. <br />
<br />
This is a member of The Great Race of Yith, from Lovecraft's "The Shadow out of Time." The description of this thing is ridiculous, and consequently, most depictions I've seen are ridiculous (although one enterprising cosplayer made a dress and some other stuff to play as a Yith. I liked that). So the challenge was to make this look NOT ridiculous. I don't know that I've succeeded, but it was a fun challenge. Pencil on crappy drawing paper.<br /><br /><br />

<br />
Here are some more life drawings. I haven't been attending as often as I'd like this spring, owing to a persistent respiratory infection. I'm slowly easing back into it, but it always feels like I've forgotten how to draw when I've been away for any amount of time. Anyway, these are all pencil drawings. The drawing above has a nice sense of geometry to it. Not quite cubist, but architectural none the less. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwyXjiiEmuOcypTWAD6ZybKjotdMxIPrguKRQMtDgGJ6yNWNJurALrB_3XVB4DYri19a5PRsm9rwkfteokUk4b_PrUl_AwnploXUWPinF3gIVUgCzKaTMwkI_btGnq7XuHZ3dgxTBqa3o/s1600/MaryAndShannon1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwyXjiiEmuOcypTWAD6ZybKjotdMxIPrguKRQMtDgGJ6yNWNJurALrB_3XVB4DYri19a5PRsm9rwkfteokUk4b_PrUl_AwnploXUWPinF3gIVUgCzKaTMwkI_btGnq7XuHZ3dgxTBqa3o/s400/MaryAndShannon1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's rare that we have two models posing together. I wish I had framed this so I could draw the shoes each of them was wearing, but as usual, I was in an awkward spot. This turned out pretty nice even so, mostly through stubborn persistence. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0RtNYHzP6d2nns-dlpDNhYNAqTMG6Q9HdfcRJ2UvpPTaKSvwRIU65mKKnSMa3liikF0v81UPF43toAZVUaC2ft04dvRaiFJ9gzp65adO8sI2VK_3mzVxd5KUU9dP4bntEDGVfiJ8FkdI/s1600/Monica1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0RtNYHzP6d2nns-dlpDNhYNAqTMG6Q9HdfcRJ2UvpPTaKSvwRIU65mKKnSMa3liikF0v81UPF43toAZVUaC2ft04dvRaiFJ9gzp65adO8sI2VK_3mzVxd5KUU9dP4bntEDGVfiJ8FkdI/s400/Monica1.jpeg" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
This chair has a ghastly yellow paisley pattern that I've rendered as giraffe spots. Whatever. The chair isn't the important part. I liked this model. She was fun to draw. I hope she sits for us again. <br />

I'm getting pretty familiar with drawing our regular models, so my likenesses are getting pretty accurate. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g79DTQgsbYs/WJY-Mtc_FqI/AAAAAAAAN2M/etqfCnkJ98UUxPo6xc8siDkZW9UF2g42wCLcB/s1600/Anna10.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g79DTQgsbYs/WJY-Mtc_FqI/AAAAAAAAN2M/etqfCnkJ98UUxPo6xc8siDkZW9UF2g42wCLcB/s400/Anna10.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I should have ignored the pattern on the chair in this drawing but I do like the weird pose of her hand. As with the drawing above, hair is fun to draw. The boots were a fun challenge, too. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xQ8d3YuDH9g/WJY-HzRnkHI/AAAAAAAAN14/diI2ochJLkELO6SbX_IDpHPbv7udrZnOgCLcB/s1600/Nyoka5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xQ8d3YuDH9g/WJY-HzRnkHI/AAAAAAAAN14/diI2ochJLkELO6SbX_IDpHPbv7udrZnOgCLcB/s400/Nyoka5.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Another challenge with boots! And foreshortening! Making the best of an awkward pose. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OaqViYArXk0/WJZBW03gl9I/AAAAAAAAN2U/_d-w7qpWsJUhYbo6351C-Vbic1EPYNTmQCLcB/s1600/mary3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OaqViYArXk0/WJZBW03gl9I/AAAAAAAAN2U/_d-w7qpWsJUhYbo6351C-Vbic1EPYNTmQCLcB/s400/mary3.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
I like elements of this drawing, but I think there's a creeping monumentalism in how I've drawn this model. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tStYEGGmVMY/WJY-II2g1QI/AAAAAAAAN18/A-dNRsNWEaA6NDhKZod-aXVy7SG1CQfqACLcB/s1600/britta12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tStYEGGmVMY/WJY-II2g1QI/AAAAAAAAN18/A-dNRsNWEaA6NDhKZod-aXVy7SG1CQfqACLcB/s400/britta12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I did three drawings of this guy at the session, in part because I had a pretty crappy angle that blocked a good portion of his mid-section with the chair. I made the best of it in this drawing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D0lUFxLtED8/WJY-IL8tRgI/AAAAAAAAN2A/oAVc9qgw9v8Wnf4DS_jrE1ZAn10kKhxwgCLcB/s1600/jeff4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D0lUFxLtED8/WJY-IL8tRgI/AAAAAAAAN2A/oAVc9qgw9v8Wnf4DS_jrE1ZAn10kKhxwgCLcB/s400/jeff4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This portrait from the side looks pretty good, in a Roman coin sort of way. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-shF3hjSOGXc/WJY-IXxGJOI/AAAAAAAAN2E/sgVu0TBzjbsho_bKfX5Nu7gDHSwTaYU_gCLcB/s1600/jeff5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-shF3hjSOGXc/WJY-IXxGJOI/AAAAAAAAN2E/sgVu0TBzjbsho_bKfX5Nu7gDHSwTaYU_gCLcB/s400/jeff5.jpg" width="285" /></a></div>
<br />
I also took advantage of my indifference to the whole pose to draw some feet. Feet are a hobgoblin for many artists, but I love drawing them. This way this foot was posed made it a particular challenge. It came out quite well, I think. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAfjmVPnJJnc93QNymfJ3iyQDWs91IMoqhQGn3fBEi8Q4TIFFuMsAuQ5XeWhus0xsF9-ddq1mNmWNo88cZJJS42nKCsEYztdSveuJnml0v_EgIxnbUvP8qDVWvYyikRXZE8PJcbFM8zHw/s1600/jeffFeet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAfjmVPnJJnc93QNymfJ3iyQDWs91IMoqhQGn3fBEi8Q4TIFFuMsAuQ5XeWhus0xsF9-ddq1mNmWNo88cZJJS42nKCsEYztdSveuJnml0v_EgIxnbUvP8qDVWvYyikRXZE8PJcbFM8zHw/s400/jeffFeet.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, this is all either graphite pencil or red col-erase Prismacolor pencil. I may put some of this up for sale. Maybe. I'll have comics again soon, I hope. <br />

<br />
<br />
Here are some more drawings from my weekly figure drawing session. The above drawing is another in a long series of awkward poses. I'm an absolute champion at finding difficult foreshortening poses. This, more than a lot of my drawings, is an example of my technique with a pencil, which is basically creative scribbling. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MIHbxuLMEXA/WGGmyAim80I/AAAAAAAANuc/TMGpf8YTuCc6kHjBk5qvHDVd6fUhoHjcACLcB/s1600/Kayleen4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MIHbxuLMEXA/WGGmyAim80I/AAAAAAAANuc/TMGpf8YTuCc6kHjBk5qvHDVd6fUhoHjcACLcB/s400/Kayleen4.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I wasn't feeling at all confident when I made this drawing. I showed up, sat down, and realized I had no idea of what I was doing. Three hours later, I had this, mostly from pigheaded struggling onward. Sometimes just showing up is half the battle. This is red prismacolor. Again, a lot of creative scribbling. <br />

As a point of contrast, here's a drawing of the same model I did in October (the skeleton was posed in honor of Halloween and I wish I had left it out of the picture, but whatever). I got a very good likeness in this drawing--much better than in the drawing above. Is it a better drawing? I don't know. Probably, but maybe not. I drew this on an expensive piece of Fabriano Artistico paper. I don't know if it's worth the extra, truth to tell, but it'll last a thousand years. <br />

Here's a watercolor of a different model with similar hair. This turned out kinda nice. Also on Fabriano Artistico. <br />

Kaiju smackdown. Drawn mostly at the urging of <a href="https://twitter.com/mooncalfe1">Sophie Campbell</a>. Brush and ink on Bristol board. Somewhat delayed by the tornado that hit my fair city and knocked out our power for a few days. <br />

<br />
These four drawings are a eventually going to be game avatars for a project I'm working on. There's an emphasis on diversity in this project, which is just fine with me because drawing people who don't look like me is fun. These are brush and ink and watercolor on bristol board. The bristol board isn't very good, unfortunately, which made for some difficulties. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneD1_XpAvxc59zebtMViD4T49xfnWPWWpGrXcagEDU65E-fNvmNBeEsHCibp3AUGPbLgy6VpxYRlcaiby34RtqfWbgEybMJuQ4qcm6ATGeJS3tbazwn68xmW12WIgi8o_JOLnlhFIo44/s1600/Dona-Slake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneD1_XpAvxc59zebtMViD4T49xfnWPWWpGrXcagEDU65E-fNvmNBeEsHCibp3AUGPbLgy6VpxYRlcaiby34RtqfWbgEybMJuQ4qcm6ATGeJS3tbazwn68xmW12WIgi8o_JOLnlhFIo44/s400/Dona-Slake.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a character design for a sword and sorcery comic story I want to make. Basically a badass queer lady thief in a bad-news fantasy city where the dead have as much value as the living. It'll be a fun story to do, if I ever get around to it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3y946ZyssZl4areQVQgrJr_qr0L38rmRQGFs-BIKlhZXElHldbWtufiyqWfhobMhQHn9ouV9KHyRZMRrpZ2cC5acC-YaSgx1zYztNETXiGaWrilfvmOIPysQrLfJ3JdULVMXnvvf_CmQ/s1600/juneInkExchangeFinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3y946ZyssZl4areQVQgrJr_qr0L38rmRQGFs-BIKlhZXElHldbWtufiyqWfhobMhQHn9ouV9KHyRZMRrpZ2cC5acC-YaSgx1zYztNETXiGaWrilfvmOIPysQrLfJ3JdULVMXnvvf_CmQ/s400/juneInkExchangeFinished.jpg" width="317" /></a></div>
<br />
This drawing is more effort at diversity, because drawing different body shapes is also fun, though I didn't actually draw this. I only inked it over pencils by my friend, <a href="http://thewellkeeper.webcomic.ws/comics/">Dee Fish</a>. This came out quite nice, I think.<br />

These last two are pencil drawings from different life drawing sessions, both of the same model, though only the second drawing really captures a likeness. The first was drawn on really, really nice paper, though, while the second is on crappy sketchbook paper. I'm really happy with both of these drawings. <br />

The Madames des Comiques group on Facebook has been doing an ink exchange this year, where various lady-type artists submit pencils for the other participants to ink. I've been really enjoying the process of making art from other people's drawings, and I've REALLY been digging the results of other people working over my own drawings. The above piece was inked by Ana King over this drawing:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdyE94FuicAPisHmqai6_JpraUA4SA9XybTR924UzCaUCB5im51wOIgkC1cdPbM4ttBVZOi-1lSgBic3-h3gaqUjqrnQcnIiagTwUXchKZRASJvaHsaxQxuiCdEV-0_2q5ws-b8RVQ0Ko/s1600/AprilInkChallengeTerrorBird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdyE94FuicAPisHmqai6_JpraUA4SA9XybTR924UzCaUCB5im51wOIgkC1cdPbM4ttBVZOi-1lSgBic3-h3gaqUjqrnQcnIiagTwUXchKZRASJvaHsaxQxuiCdEV-0_2q5ws-b8RVQ0Ko/s400/AprilInkChallengeTerrorBird.jpg" width="263" /></a></div><br />
Meanwhile, I was assigned this drawing by Elizabeth Schweitzer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisCXa7kWp_s2GZ5mgtYsMwd7rJsi39xZw6EOH3M84LFPxTEGzVyCgTkwAqcTkp6I7qsBPWydiTABlZvrD5Q1VS9I7BF_FvddjocnH7axp1e48UJl_gIapCT5qShbCfggCRUoayb3LiUac/s1600/aprilInkLionLady.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisCXa7kWp_s2GZ5mgtYsMwd7rJsi39xZw6EOH3M84LFPxTEGzVyCgTkwAqcTkp6I7qsBPWydiTABlZvrD5Q1VS9I7BF_FvddjocnH7axp1e48UJl_gIapCT5qShbCfggCRUoayb3LiUac/s400/aprilInkLionLady.jpg" width="348" /></a></div><br />
The point of this exercise is to stretch my artistic horizons. I don't usually work digitally--I don't really like working digitally--but it's a skill I need to develop and practice, so I decided to do this in Photoshop (rather than my usual default to Adobe Illustrator for digital work). This is the result: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EkC89FbeTEg/VyWNKKYc0WI/AAAAAAAANBw/P9h_YrcDLz8duSDN-lBu_zRq58gy7dB9ACKgB/s1600/aprilInkLionLadyfinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EkC89FbeTEg/VyWNKKYc0WI/AAAAAAAANBw/P9h_YrcDLz8duSDN-lBu_zRq58gy7dB9ACKgB/s400/aprilInkLionLadyfinished.jpg" width="348" /></a></div><br />
I'm not sure of what I think about this result, but I'm glad I did it. It was fun. <br />
<br />
<br />

Here are a couple of drawings from my last life drawing session. These are red col-erase Prismacolor pencils on crappy Canson sketchbook paper. I need to invest in better sketchbook paper because these drawings are pretty good but for the paper they're drawn on. As one of my old drawing teachers says: You never know when you're going to make a good drawing so make sure you always use materials that are up to it. Also: I did no construction drawing in either of these, preferring to trust my eyes rather than my idea of how figures are made. This works pretty well when drawing from life. The second drawing, below, was a ten minute drawing. <br /><br /><br />

<br />
<br />
Here's some art I've made since last we spoke. I apologize if you've seen some of this before on my social networks. <br />
<br />
The above piece is the first live figure drawing I've done since December. It's conte crayon, which I haven't used in forever. I used to love conte crayon, but somewhere along the way I fell out of the habit of using it. It has a rich, velvety darkness of tone that I love, even though I didn't take full advantage of it here. There's a certain creeping monumentalism in my figure drawing lately, which is even more prominent in the second drawing I did at this session from the same pose. This is a more technically correct drawing in graphite. I like it better. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_OKlwuTFms526jcDCdKRSWxKf8lAUacw6DHnKozxTj5o_oQhpj8cvlenkZUeg20ZynRVRoWKmeA1WV499VGL2cpssh1IH3TbvmIMLIFHEabz8cX5Wx-QZTciG3U-hGOe0Y8wQnfUpwO8/s1600/Alexa2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_OKlwuTFms526jcDCdKRSWxKf8lAUacw6DHnKozxTj5o_oQhpj8cvlenkZUeg20ZynRVRoWKmeA1WV499VGL2cpssh1IH3TbvmIMLIFHEabz8cX5Wx-QZTciG3U-hGOe0Y8wQnfUpwO8/s400/Alexa2.png" width="270" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, we have a quick sketch of Oliver Cromwell I did in prep for a comics project I have on the back burner (part of my <a href="http://jessicaabel.com/2016/01/27/idea-debt/">crippling idea debt</a>). The brush I used for this was dying, but it still had some use left in it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkNHNiytVYXi3kA_uNkmlqbV3uaud2UvmiK1b0hl0621yRgFJ5EoaSao-NJxNOCn9hyphenhypheniT0Gc61YpwOs0WQmxlU3f-a9o6aeM0gS6B_j8ee0XedQCqgEunvf90vYw7V6o1Dn8JgQiwA86c/s1600/Oliver-Cromwell-Sketch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkNHNiytVYXi3kA_uNkmlqbV3uaud2UvmiK1b0hl0621yRgFJ5EoaSao-NJxNOCn9hyphenhypheniT0Gc61YpwOs0WQmxlU3f-a9o6aeM0gS6B_j8ee0XedQCqgEunvf90vYw7V6o1Dn8JgQiwA86c/s320/Oliver-Cromwell-Sketch.png" width="309" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, a couple of fun drawings I inked over other people as part of the monthly "Ink Exchange" run by the Madames des Comiques group from St. Louis. The first was inked over Christina Steenz Stewart, the second over Tara Coble. These were fun to do. I like collaboration.<br />

<br />
<br />
This was my contribution to this month's event:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nnY0DfQq1iUUmiGT8b-5hCYvNYIcPyMauZORXGWtQYjAvb78YQqMlrPe3r1t6ISXUbOAj61UmGinjNBLB3W5bHR5M-glO1qFkg1TRKP_UvclR6u7XQuhk2ezZvgkKdzMGUFw4JcY858/s1600/Feb16InkChallengeSketch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nnY0DfQq1iUUmiGT8b-5hCYvNYIcPyMauZORXGWtQYjAvb78YQqMlrPe3r1t6ISXUbOAj61UmGinjNBLB3W5bHR5M-glO1qFkg1TRKP_UvclR6u7XQuhk2ezZvgkKdzMGUFw4JcY858/s320/Feb16InkChallengeSketch.png" width="162" /></a></div>
<br />
Which is a character I'm using in a comic I'm currently drawing. Here's the first panel of the first page of that comic. It came out quite nice: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioo7bfCMkGSZdPq2V3dA-C25bSMx44cgK2oDfNwCtlHHSUVYGfPWAJ3GpOxQXbDnlt1T6aHjvJlMXMOEJ5vIseo8fbeQYq76-dgJAEkbylDtVZSVSUONGZ2mgJ_4n8LBh2zsfe6y5cO6k/s1600/Page+1+Panel+One+WIP.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioo7bfCMkGSZdPq2V3dA-C25bSMx44cgK2oDfNwCtlHHSUVYGfPWAJ3GpOxQXbDnlt1T6aHjvJlMXMOEJ5vIseo8fbeQYq76-dgJAEkbylDtVZSVSUONGZ2mgJ_4n8LBh2zsfe6y5cO6k/s400/Page+1+Panel+One+WIP.tiff" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, there's this, which is something I started for a warm up and got caught up in drawing the snakes. Medusa and her sisters--I think this is actually Eurayale rather than Medusa, but it doesn't really matter--are subjects I keep returning to. This is for sale in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/264517554/medusa?ref=pr_shop">my Etsy store</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Enjoy.<br />

Here are a few unletterered pages from my current project. It's trans erotica again, but with werewolves and swashbuckling. No werewolves in these pages, though. Just erotica. Watercolor and ink on 300 lb Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. If all goes to plan, this will appear in <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1855150928/alphabet-anthology?ref=users">Alphabet</a>, an anthology to benefit Prism Comics. <br />

I'll be done with it by the end of November if it kills me. That still doesn't prevent hiccups from happening. <br />
<br />
This piece is described as basically barbarians vs. giant plasma monsters, with some other game-specific instructions like what weapon the barbarian woman is holding and such. The under-drawing was quick (I did it while I was chatting with a friend on Google+ as it so happens):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZiGxFpeMYS0/Vj4ZJyRAX3I/AAAAAAAAMOM/Gh7G8vXsg0s/s1600/ExilePlasmicWIP.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="321" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZiGxFpeMYS0/Vj4ZJyRAX3I/AAAAAAAAMOM/Gh7G8vXsg0s/s400/ExilePlasmicWIP.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Detailed, eh? Most of the fun comes in the inking stage. Here's the inked drawing. I didn't like the trailing figure, so I drew a the archer instead as I inked it: <br />
<br />

<br />
But this drawing has a couple of problems. One is an inking accident in the lower part of the drawing on the feet and legs of the two male barbarians. You can see the white paint on the thigh of the archer that I used to cover the smear there, and there's another smear under the left foot of the swordsman. Additionally, the aspect ratio is wrong. The size of the space this fits in in the final book is 2.6:5, so it's too narrow. You can also see the edge of the paper on the left side of the drawing. To the Photoshop! I corrected the contrast to get rid of the page tone of the paper, plus the stray pencil strokes that I failed to erase, I used the clone stamp tool to get rid of the ink smears, and I widened the image and extended the landscapes. These I just drew directly with my Wacom tablet (why am I not working digitally on this project? I'm not fast with digital tools, or, at least, not noticeably faster than I am with traditional materials, which I like). Here's the final version I sent to the client: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uXec9JeUFFA/Vj4ZSZXZDBI/AAAAAAAAMOk/cEvVMDfWtlI/s1600/ExilePlasmicEdited.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uXec9JeUFFA/Vj4ZSZXZDBI/AAAAAAAAMOk/cEvVMDfWtlI/s400/ExilePlasmicEdited.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This next drawing went off without a hitch. The image popped into my mind and the drawing went very quickly. For inspiration and reference, I looked at bunch of photographs of dancers in a production of "The Rite of Spring" choreographed by Pina Bausch. This will be reproduced in a tiny space, so a lot of detail would get lost, so this is fairly simple: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zSaUwKGWcEA/Vj4cH-Dz4WI/AAAAAAAAMOw/DCIUvYzo578/s1600/GladeFinal.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zSaUwKGWcEA/Vj4cH-Dz4WI/AAAAAAAAMOw/DCIUvYzo578/s400/GladeFinal.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Belatedly, the client suggested that I cover the naughty bits. This surprised me a bit, because the other books in this series don't shy away from harder material and this book has plenty of gore in it. There's a dancer pulling her face off in this image, after all. But, that's fine. I'm a very compliant collaborator most of the time. Again: to the Photoshop! My client suggested fur bikinis for these figures, but I didn't like that idea, so I went with something a little more civilized: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kE2bXTNWbnE/Vj4dROYYr4I/AAAAAAAAMPA/rr1Du_lO9aA/s1600/GladeRevised.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kE2bXTNWbnE/Vj4dROYYr4I/AAAAAAAAMPA/rr1Du_lO9aA/s400/GladeRevised.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is ultimately an example of the practice of drawing a naked figure and then drawing clothes on top of them, which is well-familiar to artists of comics. Anyway, I'm pushing through this. Here's a bonus image, one that went through more or less without a hitch, though it's more "sketch-like" than most of the other stuff I've done for this project. The dinosaur is modeled on the skeleton of a giganotosaur, and you can't actually see the tail of the beastie in the reference and I didn't draw it on the page, so I added it in Photoshop after I scanned it because I thought the drawing looked odd without it. I like the dynamism of this image: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLvB0buxwOtOxBM_zxr4XmwaNsCcgyF4wjtjYegVHHGfjpkoo-_xRyuQZvqEzFGyGvsIP3kp-R8Xoha8K2vKhyphenhyphen5i7S0oaTZkbbo65NTlAu5Rxj4Ighfu4iVa2OrEkr0_akhMT_uQXrrjw/s1600/giganotosaurFinal.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLvB0buxwOtOxBM_zxr4XmwaNsCcgyF4wjtjYegVHHGfjpkoo-_xRyuQZvqEzFGyGvsIP3kp-R8Xoha8K2vKhyphenhyphen5i7S0oaTZkbbo65NTlAu5Rxj4Ighfu4iVa2OrEkr0_akhMT_uQXrrjw/s400/giganotosaurFinal.png" /></a></div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LtnWkbs3ohs/VeOrHsIHArI/AAAAAAAALwQ/95N5nkSUExc/s1600/star3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LtnWkbs3ohs/VeOrHsIHArI/AAAAAAAALwQ/95N5nkSUExc/s400/star3.png" width="328" /></a></div>
I've been making a lot of art this month, but a lot of it is stuff I can't show. That hasn't stopped me from going to my regular figure drawing sessions, though, and here are a bunch drawings from those sessions I attended this month. The drawing at the head of this post is pencil and almost dry Copic markers on sketchbook paper. Dry copics have their uses, but I think I need to refill mine.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I had better luck with this model with the brush pen drawing I did of her. Working in ink without the crutch of an under-drawing is nerve-wracking:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9ZcWJ9c2a-U/VeOrF2K_9kI/AAAAAAAALwI/8OARGdOzmc4/s1600/star2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9ZcWJ9c2a-U/VeOrF2K_9kI/AAAAAAAALwI/8OARGdOzmc4/s400/star2.png" width="323" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are a couple of more traditional pencil drawings. I'm pretty happy with both of these even though I failed to capture the facial likeness of the second model. The first one, a nice older lady, was a delight to draw even though I wound up leaving the session after twenty minutes because of paint fumes in the studio space. I got a good likeness from her, which makes me happy.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Finally, here's a small piece I did for a client in between work on my two major projects. This is a matching drawing to the Demonic Dungeon Master's Guide I did a few months go, the idea that a Demonic Monster Manual is disgorging one of the dippier monsters at the reader. I thought about using the Neo-Otyugh, but the client suggested the Gelatinous Cube, which, to be honest, was a LOT easier to draw. This is brush and ink on Bristol board. Drawn out of my head entirely without references (which often spells trouble for me). Fun to draw, though. <br />

I've been posting a lot of life drawings lately. Second, I'm really digging my life drawing sessions. Anyway, here are some recent ones.<br />
