Christopher Lee (The Devil Rides Out)

I broke out the watercolors today for a commission that I've been procrastinating on. I'm sure my client will be happy to see this one finished. I have one more outstanding commission that I really need to get to soon. That one is a bit more...whimsical...than this one. Anyway, I'm glad this is done.

This is Christopher Lee, of course, as Duc de Richleau, the hero(!) of The Devil Rides Out, a Terence Fisher production for Hammer in 1968. Lee looks sinister even as the good guy and he completely blows everyone else off the screen in this film. I like the film, but mainly for Lee. I wish it had a better villain, because Charles Gray was never a good choice for a bad guy (a lesson Diamonds Are Forever could have stood to learn). I fantasize about Peter Cushing playing the villain opposite Lee, but the misers in Hammer's front office weren't springing for more than one "name" per film at the time. Bastards. Anyway, this is brush and ink and watercolor on 140lb watercolor paper.

Frankenstein and The Creature

This is a sketch card for one of my Patreon backers. The backer requested a drawing of Frankenstein and the Creature. I tried to stay away from the cinematic versions. This is more Shelly by way of Wrightson and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. I definitely wanted the good doctor to be wearing some kind of Regency-period outfit, because that era was a high point of men's fashions.

Fearless Monster Hunters

This is an illustration I did for a roleplaying game that a friend of mine wrote. She wanted a Hammer Horror sort of feel by way of Bernie Wrightson, so this is the result. (And, oh, look at that! Another excuse to draw Peter Cushing). Brush and ink and crowquill and Pitt pens on Bristol board. Technically, this is still a work in progress, but whatever. The finished piece won't be too different.

Luchador vs. Snake

Another commissioned drawing for an RPG. A luchador vs. a giant snake. Fun. Brush and ink on Bristol board. One more drawing for this project and I'm done.

Possessed Tree

This is another RPG illustration. The brief on this was "Possessed Tree: a large tree ripping a man apart." The game centers on luchadors, so it had to be a luchador as the victim. This tickles the adolescent sadist gorehound I used to be as a teenager. Fun to draw. Brush and ink on bristol board.

Redneck Cannibal Patriarch

This is another RPG illo. Brush and ink on bristol board with some touch ups with a Pitt pen. The brief on this called for a family of "deformed inbred cannibal mutants". So I immediately think: The Sawyer Family from Texas Chainsaw, which led me back to Ed Gein. This isn't anyone in particular, by the way. I'm just offering my thought process. I was really happy with this until I realized that I omitted the "deformed mutant" part of the equation, so I went back in and put a radiation burn on his face. Fortunately, the client liked it.
