Some illustration work (August 2018)

I've had a couple of illustration gigs this summer. The first one consisted of drawing some superheroes, for what use I do not know. Here are some of them. These are all pretty much pure watercolor. I wish I'd sprung for better watercolor paper. Instead, I used bristol board. The White Wombat is brush and ink and watercolor, while the Kirby-ish one with the Superman knock off was drawn with a mix of brush and ink, Pitt pens, and watercolor. I like stretching my legs in watercolor. It's my favorite painting medium. The client wanted most of these to look like comics from the eighties, and the only really specific instruction I had was to make the Red Queen look like the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, only in red. These turned out okay and they were fun to do.

Late August Art Dump

I've been making a lot of art this month, but a lot of it is stuff I can't show. That hasn't stopped me from going to my regular figure drawing sessions, though, and here are a bunch drawings from those sessions I attended this month. The drawing at the head of this post is pencil and almost dry Copic markers on sketchbook paper. Dry copics have their uses, but I think I need to refill mine.

More Creatures

Here are a some more creatures for the RPG commission I'm working on right now. I'll have more of these pretty soon. The top one is another feathered dinosaur, though one that's more overtly a dinosaur. The other is a giant flea. Insects are insanely fun to draw, especially fanciful ones where I can cut loose. The first drawing is entirely brush and ink. The big bug is brush and pen and Pitt pens. Both are on Bristol board.

Tyrion Lannister

I struggle with likenesses even when I work from photographs (as I did on this drawing), so I'm surprised at how much this actually looks like Peter Dinklage. This was drawn as a gift. Brush and ink and Copic markers on Bristol board. Original is 4" x 6-1/2".

Edgar Allan Poe

This is a sketchcard I did for one of my Patreon backers, who asked me to draw Edgar Allan Poe for him. I'm well aware of the fact that Poe was deathly afraid of cats, but I didn't want to draw ravens. Too obvious.

Ripping Creeper

This is a piece I did for a game. The brief called for a particularly nasty carnivorous vine with hooked thorns. I love inventing horrible alien botany.

Fearless Monster Hunters

This is an illustration I did for a roleplaying game that a friend of mine wrote. She wanted a Hammer Horror sort of feel by way of Bernie Wrightson, so this is the result. (And, oh, look at that! Another excuse to draw Peter Cushing). Brush and ink and crowquill and Pitt pens on Bristol board. Technically, this is still a work in progress, but whatever. The finished piece won't be too different.

Doctor Frankenstein, I Presume

This is another warm-up drawing that took on a life of its own. It's Peter Cushing as Doctor Frankenstein, as he appeared in films by Hammer Studios. This week was Cushing's 100th birthday, so I was planning to do some art to celebrate in any event. Brush and ink and Copic markers on Bristol board. 4"x6".

The Enchantress

Yesterday was the 19th anniversary of Jack Kirby's death. In celebration, it was also Kirby Create Day, and here's my contribution. This is The Enchantress (one of Thor's most persistent nemeses). Brush and ink and Prismacolor markers on Bristol board.

Nazgul

I've been letting this blog lie a little bit fallow lately. That's bad, methinks, so here's a piece I did for my failed Fantastic Fest fundraiser. The client wanted a horse but left it up to me to determine what else I would draw, so here you go. Pitt pens and Copic markers on Bristol board. It turned out pretty well, all in all.

Captain Marvel vs. The Super Skrull

I've been meaning to draw the new version of Captain Marvel ever since I saw the re-designed costume. This is brush and ink on bristol board, colored with prismacolor markers.

I kinda wish I hadn't colored this. I think I like the black and white version better.

Jess Model Sheet

This is a character model sheet. I'll eventually do 20 or thirty of these drawings for each of the characters in the comic I'll be drawing in a few weeks. Doing the grunt work early before I actually have to produce pages. This is Pitt brush pen over pencil on crappy Caslon sketchbook paper.

Johnny Cash

Taking a break from commission work today. I decided to draw Johnny Cash. I've been meaning to draw The Man In Black for a while, now. This turned out better than I expected. This is Pitt brush pen and Copic marker on bristol board with some scratchboard technique on the guitar. This is 7.5 x 4 inches.

Luchador 1

This is a work in progress for a commission job I got this week. Of all the things I ever expected to draw, a luchador in an Elmer Fudd hat is not one of them. Ah, the glorious life of an illustrator...

Black Canary

I woke up this morning with a desire to draw Black Canary. This is the pre-New 52 version, though not the classic version. I might do the classic version down the line. Anyway, this pen and ink and art marker on a 5"x3" piece of Bristol board. It was fun to draw.
