Here There Be Monsters

This is the story I did for the Alphabet anthology a couple of years ago. I painted the whole thing in watercolor (perhaps foolishly) because, well, I wanted to get at least some use out of my art degree.

Some Unlettered Comics Pages

Here are a few unletterered pages from my current project. It's trans erotica again, but with werewolves and swashbuckling. No werewolves in these pages, though. Just erotica. Watercolor and ink on 300 lb Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. If all goes to plan, this will appear in Alphabet, an anthology to benefit Prism Comics.

Exile Master Post

The Exile is unweildy to read on blogger, so I thought I'd gather it together in one master post. Now that it's finished, it's not too horrible. If you'd prefer a traditional webcomics interface, try my comics tumblr.

Exile Page 15

So, after being waylaid by plagues of insects, pestilence, penury, and self-loathing, this is finally done. There will be another page of this eventually once the forthcoming Kickstarter resolves because I need a filler page to make the double-page spread on page 7 and 8 printable as such. It doesn't affect the story at all, so if it never gets funded for print, it'll never get drawn, either, and no one will be the wiser. There will also be a related piece of art--probably a watercolor painting--for a cover for the print edition. But that's all for the future.

Many thanks to Katie Zall who was very patient with this process given the various disasters that befell me over the last year. Many thanks, also, to everyone who read this story and offered feedback. In particular, thanks go to Shelly Jarenski, Renee Knipe, and J. Luis Rivera who all contributed something to the project.

As always, you can read the entire thing at once on the Exile master post, or, if you prefer, I've set up a webcomics tumblr if you'd like to read this and my other comics in a common webcomics interface. Entirely up to you.  If you'd like to support my comics, consider pledging to my Patreon. If you're intimidated by all the stuff I post every month, you can cap your pledge at whatever is comfortable for you. Regardless, this story will remain free to read on the web given that my target readership is as destitute as I am.

Next? Hell if I know. I have some ideas...

Exile Page 14

This page has been done for a bit. I've been holding onto it like an idiot on the assumption that I can get better value out of it depending on when I post it thanks to the way that Patreon works. I'm an idiot, because it doesn't freaking matter. If I posted this when it was done, it would have kicked one of my other art posts into this slot. So Katie can get a check from me and all will be ducky. There's one-ish page left of this story and I should have it done in a day or two. As usual, you can read the entire thing at once here. This page is a return to explicit sex, so it's behind the cut.

Exile page 13

The Exile of Natalie Rios page 13

Here's the next page of "The Exile of Natalie Rios". Mostly brush and ink on Bristol board. I don't think I used pens for much of this. I should be finishing this project up pretty soon. I hope. This is another relatively safe-for-work page. This is getting to be a habit. This page is considerably different from what Katie wrote for me. It's one of the pages I re-wrote in order to draw it more easily.

As always, the master post for this story is here if you need to catch up.

Exile Page 12

The Exile of Natalie Rios by Christianne Benedict and Rachel K. Zall

As usual, this was much delayed by real-world obligations, but relatively safe for work for a change. Not even any bad language!

This is substantially different from what Katie wrote for this page (and the next two, for that matter). The content was all there in the script, but it was arranged in a way that would have been very difficult for me to draw. I asked if she minded if I re-wrote parts of this then bounced it off of her. She was more than receptive to my ideas. This is the way collaboration works, and Katie has been a complete joy to work with.

The first panel is mostly Pitt pens, while the rest is brush and ink. Plus lots of white-out and digital corrections. More than I would like.

The master post for the Exile with all pages is here.

Exile page 11

The Exile of Natalie Rios page 11

Way behind on this. Pesky other obligations. Mostly brush and ink on Bristol board. A rare page from this that's actually more or less safe for work, depending on your workplace's tolerance of the word "fuck." Katie Zall has been very patient with me over the course of this project. She's a saint, I tells ya.

Exile Page 10

This is a redo of a previous page. Long story, short, I screwed up. Anyway, hopefully, I can get back into the comics groove now. I've been struggling with it. Comics are a fucking grind most of the time.

Exile, page 9

This has been finished for a while. Katie asked me to hold off posting this while she runs a fundraiser on her tumblr. If you like queer erotica, she's offering stories as an incentive. In any case, back to this. Brush and ink and typeset, mostly, though I also used a Pitt brush pen and my fingerprints. This page was fun to draw.

Exile pages 7 and 8

Finally back to work on this. It's amazing how much easier it is to draw comics when your hands aren't covered with sores. This is a two page spread. I drew the top of this digitally, and I'm not really all that happy with it. there are some things I like, but not many. My avoidance of gray tones here borders on the masochistic.

The two pieces of art on the walls here are by Jim Dine and Willem DeKooning.

Work in Progress on the Exile

A part of the porntastic comics page I’m drawing right now. Work in progress (unerased pencils and all). Mostly posted to assure my collaborator, Katie Zall, that I am indeed back at it and that she hasn’t written me anything I can’t really draw. I'm hoping to push through and finish The Exile by the end of next week. We'll see if I keep to that.

Tally ho.

The Exile Page 6

Here's page six of "The Exile and Happy Landing of Natalie Rios", written by Rachel K. Zall. I'm pretty happy with this page, but I took too much time to draw it. I get that way when I have to fiddle with perspective and backgrounds sometimes. If I wasn't already committed to black and white, this page has sealed the deal. Hopefully, the next page won't take nearly so long.

Brush and ink and Pitt pens on Bristol board.

Back to Work

Finally back to work on The Exile. (Actually, I've been at it for days, but I'm finally getting my groove back). Plus, my super-cramped work space. I really need to organize my workspace better. Lots of fiddly perspective on this page, which is part of why I've lingered so long on it. Tighter pencils than usual, but I find that I ink better when the pencils are tighter. I'm digging the inking process right now, which is new. I used to dread inking, but now it's the pencils that are the make-work. In any event, I hope to push this story through to being done relatively soon. End of April is my goal. Sooner would be better. Some dumb freelance job is probably going to screw that up, though, so no promises.

Exile Page 5

Here's page five of "The Exile and Happy Landing of Natalie Rios," written by Rachel K. Zall. Brush and ink and Pitt pens on Bristol board. Very not safe for work.

Exile page 4

Here's page 4 of "The Exile and Happy Landing of Natalie Rios", written by Rachel K. Zall. Pitt pens on Bristol board, mostly. Some brushwork. Not much. I'm pretty happy with how this is going.

Exile page 3

Here's page three of "The Exile and Happy Landing of Natalie Rios". This page is only somewhat NSFW. Pen and ink on Bristol board. Mostly Pitt pens on this page because my inking brush is dying. I should probably mention that I'm using Smack Attack from Blambot for most of the lettering on this story.

Exile page 2

Here's page two of the comic I'm doing with Rachel K. Zall. Very not safe for work. I'm putting a mature content warning on my art blog for this. So there you go. Pen and ink on Bristol board. Not sure how I feel about this.

Exile Page 1

This is the first page of a comic I'm drawing. This is VERY not safe for work, particularly if you work for anyone who is even a little bit homophobic or squeamish about queer sex. I haven't decided whether or not this is going to remain black and white or not. I like it in black and white and it'll be easier to print it that way, but the web is color.

This will be eleven or twelve pages when it's done. The story spans 21 years in a short amount of time, so it's a challenge. This is mostly brush and ink and Pitt pen on Bristol board. I lettered it in Illustrator.
